Since I have been raving so much about flash fiction lately, I was quite excited when I stumbled upon this mini writing challenge. The goal is to write your life story in six words or less – just six! I found the idea on uncustomary.org, and thought I’d give it a try.
I’ve seen some wonderful six word stories over the years. The one that always stands out for me (and I think for a lot of people exploring flash fiction) is:
For sale: baby shoes, never worn.
– Ernest Hemingway
It seemed more challenging though to write something about my own life, a very personal kind of short story.
After some thought, I decided on:
Books: welcomed escape and seized opportunity
I’ve always written and read, and it has been very cathartic for me through childhood, and still is today. Perhaps too much escapism isn’t good but without books I wouldn’t have grown my enthusiasm for learning, and wouldn’t have been able to complete my degree. And it certainly wouldn’t have led to me working for an organisation that inspires me every single day.
I would loved to have had even one or two more words (this is sounding spookily reminiscent of my first months on Twitter), but the restrictive word limit means you have to be extra diligent!
What would your six word story be? Post your thoughts in the comments below!
