The Reading Spellbook

I thought it would be fun to make my reading this year into a game. I haven’t read much in 2020 so far, so I’m hoping this will give me the push to spend a little more time staring at books instead of screens.  Especially since I thought I was being really relaxed giving myself a goal of one book a month, but I’ve been struggling to keep up!

So, the idea is to read books to unlock scrolls, which will add new spells to my spellbook.  Each spell makes me that much more stronger and wiser!  Inside my spellbook already, you’ll be able to see what I have read so far…

Here’s my spellbook:

(So many to choose from, but I just love that swirl on the front!)

Here’s what’s inside:

A spell to show the healing powers of animals:

The White Giraffe by Lauren St. John

A spell for introverts:

Sorry I’m Late, I Didn’t Want to Come: An Introvert’s Year of Living Dangerously by Jessica Pan

A spell for Brontë lovers:

Glass Town by Isabel Greenberg

A spell for young adventurers:

Frostheart by Jamie Littler

A spell to help develop empathy:

Funny, You Don’t Look Autistic: A Comedian’s Guide to Life on the Spectrum by Michael McCreary

A spell to defeat evil:

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J. K. Rowling

A spell to understand people:

The Humans by Matt Haig

Scrolls left to collect:

I’m making steady progress, I just need to keep going!  I wonder what might happen if I manage to gather all the spells…

This is such an amazing and fun idea! Can’t wait to see what you end up with in your spellbook by the end of the year 🙂

Thank you! I’m a bit of a sucker for collecting things, so this is a fun way to try to work with my bad screen-time habits, and get reading more instead! Feel free to play along, I’m envisaging having a different theme each year that ties into a wider magical story! 😀
